  Pesticides
1999–2004
Dioxins
1999–2000
Measure Possible carcinogens, pesticides chlordane and DDT and their metabolites, measured in human blood. Measurement of tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) in human blood adjusting for lipids and EPA estimates of dioxin releases in the environment.

Most recent estimate In 2003–2004, blood and urine concentrations (nanograms per gram) were 37.7 for oxychlordane, 68.3 for trans-nonachlor, 18.9 for heptachlor epoxide, and 1,860 for DDT (DDE). 95th percentile of TCDD concentration in the U.S. population: 5.2 pg/g.

Estimated dioxin releases to the environment in 2000: 1.42 kg-TEQ.
Healthy People 2020 target Reduce exposure of the population to pesticides, heavy metals, and other toxic chemicals, as measured by blood and urine concentrations of the substances or their metabolites, as follows:
  • Reduce chlordane (oxychlordane) from 37.7 ng/g to 26.39 ng/g of lipid.
  • Reduce DDT (DDE) from 1860 ng/g to 1302 ng/g of lipid.
  • Reduce beta-hexachlorocyclohexane (beta-HCH) from 56.5 ng/g to 39.55 ng/g of lipid.
There is no Healthy People 2020 target for dioxins.
