Civil Service

Foreign Service Specialists

Foreign Service Specialists are instrumental in the daily operations of U.S. embassies and consulates, and are responsible for security, safety, and protection of people, technology and structures. We require specific skills in the financial, technical and support services areas. Opportunities exist in seven different categories with 22 different specialist jobs. These categories include: Security, Information Technology, Construction Engineering, Medical and Health, Office Management, Administration, and International Information English Language Programs.

Foreign Service Officers

Foreign Service Officers (FSOs) deal with a variety of ever-changing challenges, which may include consular services such as screening visa applicants and issuing visas; political initiatives such as observing elections in host countries; or analyzing and reporting on issues such as HIV/ AIDS, rights, fair trade, and technology. Foreign Service Officers work in one of five different career tracks: Consular Economic, Management, Political and Public Diplomacy.

Afghanistan Jobs

The U.S. Department of State is hiring highly skilled and motivated U.S. citizens to work at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, in east central Afghanistan.

Iraq Jobs

Currently, the Iraq Strategic Partnership Office (ISPO) hires highly skilled and motivated United States citizens, including current permanent Federal employees on behalf of the Department of State to serve our nation in Iraq’s "International Zone" — an area of approximately five square kilometers, about 6 miles from the Baghdad International Airport (BIAP).
