  1. Photo: The 2013 Northeast U.S. Coast class of emergency managers and decision-makers wrapped up their week-long coursework and training today at NHC. Congratulations! The sessions covered all of the hurricane hazards, the products issued by NHC, and a hands-on exercise to aid them in making the necessary decisions when a tropical cyclone threatens their region once again.
  2. Photo: Congratulations go to Dr. Louis Uccellini. NOAA has selected him as its Assistant Administrator for weather services and the 16th director of NOAA’s National Weather Service.
Since 1999, Louis has led the NWS’ National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), responsible for directing the planning, science and technology, and operational responsibilities related to NCEP’s Central Operations and Environmental Modeling, as well as seven national centers, including the National Hurricane Center.

  3. Photo: Class begins this morning at NHC for two dozen emergency managers and decision-makers from the Northeast U.S. coastal communities. The week-long training sessions include all of the hurricane hazards, the products issued by NHC, and a hands-on exercise to aid these students in making the necessary decisions when a tropical cyclone threatens their region. In this photo, the group is welcomed by senior hurricane specialist Daniel Brown.

  5. Photo: The 2013 Southeast U.S. Coast class of emergency managers and decision-makers have successfully completed their week-long coursework and training at NHC. Congratulations! Next week, the course will be taught to those from the Northeast U.S. coast.
  6. Photo: Training continues this week at NHC for two dozen emergency managers and decision-makers from the Southeast U.S. coastal community. It's a hands-on exercise today, with a hurricane threatening the Southeast U.S. coastline. In this photo, FEMA Region III's Dave Odegard and FEMA Region IV's Rebecca Jennings lead the class through the drill.
  7. Photo: NHC this week welcomes another two dozen decision-makers and emergency managers, this time representing the Southeast U.S. coastal states from Florida to Virginia. In this photo, NHC senior hurricane specialist Stacy Stewart teaches a course in tropical cyclone forecasting. It's part of a week-long training that will include the hurricane hazards, the products issued by NHC, and a hands-on exercise to aid these students in making the necessary decisions when a tropical cyclone threatens their region.
  8. Photo: NHC hosted its annual Visiting Scientist Program during the 2012 hurricane season. And once again, it was a big success. Each of the scientists had the opportunity to be at NHC during actual tropical storm and hurricane events, spending up to three days with the hurricane specialists and one day with the marine forecasters in NHC’s Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch. By shadowing these forecasters, each learned the analysis and prediction methodologies, technologies employed, observations and models used, time constraints, and ways that forecasts are communicated. 9. Photo: Again this year, NOAA's National Hurricane Center (NHC) is offiering "The Hurricane Webinars for 5th Grade classes". They're presented by the Hurricanes: Science and Society team at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography in partnership with NHC and NOAA's Aircraft Operations Center (AOC).
During these 1-hour Webinars, students will hear from NHC scientists and forecasters as well as AOC officers that fly into hurricanes.
It's all to to raise awareness about hurricanes in advance of the 2013 North Atlantic hurricane season. The Webinars will be presented by region: Gulf Coast, Southeast, and Northeast. Again, this is for 5th grade students only.
