The flu contingency plans for Loudoun County in the November 2009 election was and may continue to be:

  1. Special disinfectant wipes specifically for the touchscreen.

  2. #2 pencils distributed with paper ballots; the pencil becomes the property of the voter they take with them.

  3. Disinfectant wipes for all surfaces but not the touchscreen.

  4. A small bottle of hand sanitizer distributed to each election officer to keep.

  5. Training included special instructions: stay home if sick or running a temperature; call us immediately to attempt to locate a replacement.

  6. If possible, we placed one and a half person extra in each precinct.  Many workers did call out sick but a replacement was already scheduled to work.

  7. We asked Inova Loudoun Hospital to come to as many of our training sessions as possible to give flu shots. Of course, coming to all of our 24 sessions was not possible so they came to our two largest sessions. At the time the H1N1 shot was not available so everyone just had the seasonal flu shot. The hospital charged less than the going rate for the shot and accepted Medicare cards. Our election officers were pleased with this service and even if they were not there for the training session they came for the shot.

  8. We were prepared to offer mask and gloves for the officers who asked for them (some brought their own from home).  In the future we may place a set in each emergency first aid kit, just in case.
