Hosting Services (8)

  • Co-Location Services

    Many organizations already own their own equipment for hosting applications, but find that they are simply running out of floor space or lack the resources to house their hardware properly. To address this problem, CIT provides housing for your equipment in a secure, climate-controlled environment, where customers have 24x7 access to manage their own hardware.

    The Co-Location Service provides housing for customer-owned servers and other equipment either in building 12 on-campus in the NIH Data Center's Customer Server Areas (CSA-1 or CSA-2) or off-campus in the NIH Consolidated Co-Location Site (NCCS) in northern Virginia. The service includes full or partial rack rental. Co-Location provides:
    Space:
    • Various rental options - full, or partial, standard-size racks for your use
    • Charging based on the amount of rack space needed
    • 24x7 access to your equipment

     Physical security:

    • Multi-layer security control procedures
    • Badge and biometric readers
    • 24x7 closed-circuit video
    • Operations staff on-site, 24x7
    • Yearly SSAE 16 (formerly SAS/70) Type II audit

    Power:

    • N+2 continuous redundant power with diesel generator backup
    • Power solutions that are flexible and upgradeable

    Connectivity:

    • Redundant, high-bandwidth network connectivity
    • Overhead cable management - providing easy access to all cabling

    Environmental controls:

    • Dedicated CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioner) units to monitor and maintain temperature, air distribution, and humidity
    • Fire suppression: VESDA deployed 100% in multiple zones throughout the facility above and below raised floors

  • Database Hosting Services

    Database Hosting Services provide dedicated and shared database environments that are centrally supported in fully managed, 24x7 hosted environments available on multiple platforms with managed storage, backup services, and disaster recovery offerings.

  • Search Engine Service

    Search Engine Service is available to customers who want a customized sub-search for their websites. Along with a simple search results page, CIT provides you with an indexed collection of web pages based on your specified group of servers. Upon request, this service also offers Dynamic Result Clusters, an easy way to narrow users’ searches to focus on the desired search results and avoid irrelevant information.

  • Mainframe (Titan) Hosting Services

    Mainframe (Titan) Services offer an efficient, reliable, economical computing environment for enterprise applications for NIH and other government agencies. Services include TSO, batch and interactive processing, ISPF, DB2, IMS, programming languages, web services (SILK/Shadow), using the mainframe as an Oracle client, managed disk and tape storage, printing services, scientific statistical systems, secure file transfer technologies such as Connect: Direct and SSH (Secure Shell), disaster recovery, and off-site storage services.

  • Unix Hosting Services

    Unix Hosting Services provide dedicated, shared, and virtual Unix servers that are centrally supported in a fully managed, 24x7 hosted environment. The Unix environment—approximately 300 servers—is appropriate for any Unix-based application and has specific capabilities for applications that use Oracle databases. Services include managed storage and backup, SSL certificates, network security architectures, application firewalls, shared and dedicated load balancers, central web and database services in shared and dedicated configurations, and disaster recovery offerings.

    Unix hosting services are available both in the NIH Data Center on the NIH Campus and at our contracted off-campus commercial site in northern Virginia.

    More information on hardware and software is available on the CIT website.

  • Windows Hosting Services

    Windows Hosting Services provide dedicated, shared, and virtual Windows servers that are centrally supported in a fully managed, 24x7 hosted environment. Services include managed storage and backup, SSL certificates, network security architectures, application firewalls, shared and dedicated load balancers, central web and database services including shared and dedicated configurations, file and print services, and disaster recovery offerings.

    Windows hosting services are available both in the NIH Data Center on the NIH Campus and at our contracted off-campus commercial site in northern Virginia.

    We support the major components of the Windows Server Suite:

    • IIS (virtualized, shared, and dedicated)
    • SQL Server 2005/2008 (shared, and dedicated)
    • Microsoft Office SharePoint Services 2010 (shared and dedicated services)
  • zLinux Virtual Server Hosting

    The zLinux Virtual Server Hosting service provides open source servers for NIH Data Center customers. The zLinux Virtual Hosting Server is based on the zEnterprise server platform that supports the z/VM (virtual machine) operating system and Red Hat Enterprise Linux to run multiple virtual Linux servers.

    Additional services on zLinux include:

    • Blogs: public online journals run on WordPress;
    • LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP/PERL)-based applications: an interlocking set of technologies on which developers can build and deploy web-based applications;
    • Wikis: collaborative websites where authorized users can add or modify content using their browser;
    • Apache-based front end to an MS SQL server database;
    • Statistical packages and a wide variety of other software (such as clustering software);
    • Content Management Software (e.g., Joomla, Drupal, WordPress)
  • Linux Hosting Services

    CIT offers application hosting services on dedicated, physical servers and on virtual machines (also called VMs or virtual servers) running the Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system.

    Linux VM

    The Linux VM option provides a flexible, lower cost option for customers who don’t need the resources of a dedicated, physical server. For more information about the Linux VM option, including available CPU and memory configurations, see the Linux Virtual Server Service page.

    Dedicated Physical Linux Servers

    For dedicated, physical Linux servers, CIT provides the following CPU and memory configurations:

    • 2 CPUs, 8GB memory
    • 4 CPUs, 64GB memory

    Dedicated Linux servers are housed in a secure, centrally supported hosting environment, and the service includes managed storage and backup. Additional options include SSL certificates, network security architectures, application firewalls, shared and dedicated load balancers, and central web and database services.
