Methods Development

To test the efficacy (whether or not an intervention works under tightly controlled conditions) of an intervention, appropriate methods must be utilized. This is achieved by creating new or improved methods of measurement, intervention, research design, or analysis.

• Early Detection Research Network (Cancer)
  National Cancer Institute (NCI)
  The purpose of the Early Detection Research Network is to develop a collaboration that will develop, test, and evaluate promising biomarkers, or molecular indicators, for the investigation of cancer and other diseases. The Network's goals are to accelerate the translation of biomarker information into clinical applications and to evaluate new ways of preventing the onset and progression of cancer.



• Prevention of Alcohol Use in Individuals Infected with HIV
  National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
  Alcohol use contributes to morbidity and mortality associated with HIV and can lead to a number of health complications. The purpose of this study is to research, analyze, and develop methods to prevent or reduce excessive alcohol use among people living with HIV. This research can contribute greatly to efforts to improve the health of those living with HIV and to reduce the spread of HIV.



• Data Harmonization Projects
  National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
  These three Data Harmonization Projects aim to promote common measures that can be used by researchers in various fields, including clinical researchers, geneticists, and other addiction researchers. These projects allow researchers to share data sets to detect more subtle associations, thereby promoting greater collaboration and improving efficiency. By facilitating the gathering and sharing of information, these projects may facilitate the identification of new disease prevention methods.



• Center for Prevention and Treatment Methodology
  National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
  The overarching goal of the Center for Prevention and Treatment Methodology is to improve quantitative methods for behavioral research in the prevention and treatment of substance use, HIV, and related disorders, and to place the improved methods in the hands of prevention and treatment scientists.
