Clinical Software Development: What's New, What's Next?
J. Michael McCoy, M.D.
2007-12-31
Advances in software architecture and development are seldom based on new ideas as much as on recognizing the potential of new applications of old ideas. William Gibson's observation that 'The future is already here - it's just not evenly distributed,' is especially apropos to software. This presentation will illustrate the validity of this proposition with examples from the past and suggest some 'old' ideas that are shaping the future.Dr. McCoy is a nationally recognized expert in hospital and medical school information systems. His experience includes serving as Chief Information Officer, UCLA Healthcare; Associate Dean for Information Technology, UCLA School of Medicine; Senior Natural Scientist, RAND Corporation, Santa Monica, California and CIO, Bumrungrad International Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. McCoy guides the overall architecture of the Regenstrief Medical Record System (RMRS) and all of its components to create a coherent, componentized, scaleable model that will serve as the foundation for the next generation of the Regenstrief Institute's informatics research and development efforts. He explores new technologies to understand their potential value and helps establish innovative development procedures.
