NCBI's 20th Anniversary Noted in Congressional Record

July 1, 2009

The 20th anniversary of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) was cited in the Congressional Record by Rep. David R. Obey, Democratic member of the US House of Representatives from Wisconsin and Chair of the House Committee on Appropriations.

Rep. Obey has long been a friend of biomedical research and health care, and was an early supporter of legislation to create the institution that would become NCBI. In his remarks for the Congressional Record, he lauded the work of the late Claude Pepper, who in 1987 introduced a bill to establish the NCBI. Rep. Obey also praised the leadership of NCBI Director David Lipman, MD as well as NLM Director, Donald A. B. Lindberg, MD and the dedicated staff of the NCBI “for 20 years of outstanding public service to the nation and the world."
