Gary L. Smith, Chief, Clinical Trials Monitoring Branch (CTMB)

Gary L. Smith was appointed Branch Chief in January 2011, following the untimely death of Joan Mauer in October, 2010. Gary received the degree of Master in General Administration with concentration in Healthcare Administration from the University of Maryland, and a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from the University of Maryland, School of Medicine. He began his career as a Medical Technologist for the Hematology Service, Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health (NIH). Since 1988, Gary has been a Clinical Trials Monitoring Specialist in CTEP, serving as Associate Chief since October 2008. In this capacity, Gary has distinguished himself as a member of a multi-disciplinary team of health care professionals responsible for evaluating, implementing, and monitoring clinical trials of investigational agents sponsored by the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis, NCI. He is the project officer for the Clinical Trials Monitoring Service contract. During his tenure in this position, he has attended over 200 cancer center site visits, and coordinated and/or reviewed countless other cancer center site visits and/or Cooperative Group audits.
