ATTENTION TUNGSTEN T5 AND TREO USERS: successful synchronization to these devices may require ROM updates available from Palm; see details below. - 8.5 MB (megabytes) of available space, either on the handheld or on an expansion card. - Personal computer with the following installed software: * Software to synchronize with your handheld, e.g., Palm Desktop for MS Windows or Mac OS, or pilot-link for Linux/Unix. * Adobe Reader for viewing the WISER documentation. Download for free from http://www.adobe.com. NOTE for Palm Desktop users: It is highly recommended that you use the latest version of Palm Desktop that is compatible with your version of Palm OS. Free upgrades can be downloaded from http://www.palm.com. Use of older versions has proved to result in significantly longer times to install the large WISER database file. To determine the amount of memory on your Palm OS device, open the Application Launcher and select the "Info..." option from the App menu (the App menu is accessed by tapping the top-left corner of the screen, where the clock is displayed). The resulting display includes the amount of free space available on the handheld. If your device has an expansion card, change the ‘Device’ drop-down list to ‘Card’ to determine its free space. INSTALLING WISER ---------------- Multiple versions of downloads are available from the WISER web site for installing WISER on various platforms. WISER_PalmOS_full.exe is the setup program for MS Windows platforms, and WISER_PalmOS_full.zip is available to support installing on Mac and Unix/Linux platforms. Details are provided below for installing WISER via the automated setup program provided for MS Windows, or via the Zip archive. ATTENTION TUNGSTEN T5 AND TREO USERS: ROM updates available from Palm (http://www.palm.com) fix known issues with synchronizing large files to the handheld memory, which may be an issue when attempting to install WISER. In the case of the Tungsten T5, another alternative is to transfer the WISER files to the "internal" drive. See the separate "INSTALLATION - TUNGSTEN T5" section below for additional details on installing to this device. INSTALLING WISER: MS Windows Automated Setup -------------------------------------------- Quick-Start Instructions: 1. Download and run the setup program: WISER_PalmOS_full.exe. 2. The WISER handheld files will be automatically loaded into the Palm Desktop install utility (Quick Install or Install Tool). 3. If applicable, within the Palm Desktop install utility, distribute the files as required between the handheld and expansion card. 4. Run Palm Desktop's HotSync to load the files onto your device. Detailed Instructions: 1. Download the setup program, WISER_PalmOS_full.exe, from the WISER web site and run it. This copies the WISER documentation to your computer, as well as the files that must be installed onto your handheld device via a HotSync. By default, these files are located under the folder "C:\Program Files\WISER\PalmOS", and consist of: C:\Program Files \WISER \PalmOS README.TXT (this file) QuickStart.pdf WISER_User_Guide.pdf uninsXXX.dat (required for uninstalling) uninsXXX.exe (required for uninstalling) \Handheld WISER.prc (Palm application file) \Data * \full WISERele.pdb (Palm database file) WISERidx.pdb (Palm database file) * Older versions of WISER included "full" and "small" versions of the PDB (palm database) files, depending on which version of the installer was downloaded. Each creates a separate folder under the Data folder that corresponds to the size, making multiple downloads possible. 2. When the installation completes, the Palm Desktop's install utility is launched. For Palm Desktop version 4.1 or greater, this is Quick Install, otherwise it is Install Tool. In either case, it will show the WISER Palm files that will be installed to your handheld during the next HotSync: WISER.prc, WISERidx.pdb, and WISERele.pdb. 3. By default, the WISER Palm files will be installed to your handheld device's memory (RAM). NOTE WELL: the .pdb files are large (7 MB), and thus many users may require or desire that these files be loaded on an expansion card (if the device is so equipped). To verify the amount of free memory on your device, tap the "Info..." option from your handheld's application launcher App menu. If it is desired or required that the WISER files be placed on an expansion card, change the destination within the Palm Desktop install utility. With Quick Install, you can simply drag files between the Handheld and Expansion Card areas; with Install Tool, press the "Change Destination..." button and then distribute the files as desired. NOTE that the PRC file may be installed in a separate location (handheld vs. card) than the PDB files, but both PDB files MUST be in the same location. If installation to an expansion card is desired, it is highly recommended that the small WISER.prc be installed on the handheld, and the two .pdb files be installed on the card, so that WISER is accessible from the handheld's application launcher (without having to navigate to the card). 4. Copies of the WISER Palm files will remain on your computer in the "Handheld" folder shown above in case you need to reinstall them on your handheld in the future. Simply double-click these files to load them into the Palm Desktop's install utility. Uninstalling from MS Windows: Following installation via the setup program, WISER can be uninstalled from your Windows PC via the Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs. This is dependent on the uninsXXX.exe/.dat files that are in the WISER installation location. INSTALLING WISER: .ZIP Download ------------------------------- WISER is also available for download as a Zip archive, which is universally supported on all platforms, including Mac and Linux/Unix. On a Mac, its contents can be extracted using the StuffIt Extractor product that is included in Mac OS. On Linux, use "unzip". 1. Download the zip file: WISER_PalmOS_full.zip, and extract its contents. The directory hierarchy is the same as that shown above in the MS Windows installation details. 2. Manually load the contents of the "handheld" folder (WISER.prc, WISERidx.pdb, WISERele.pdb) into you Palm synchronization utility. 3. If applicable, within the Palm synchronization utility, distribute the files as required between the handheld and expansion card. 4. Synchronize with your handheld, e.g., run Palm Desktop's HotSync to load the files onto your device. INSTALLING WISER: TUNGSTEN T5 ----------------------------- These devices have known issues with synchronizing large files to the handheld memory, which may be an issue when attempting to install the WISER database. Palm has provided a fix in the "Tungsten T5 Update v1.1", which can be downloaded from www.palm.com. This issue can also be avoided by instead HotSyncing the database (.PDB) files to an expansion card, or transferring them to the T5's "internal" drive. Details are provided below. INSTALLING TO THE INTERNAL DRIVE: Programs and files are placed on the internal drive using the Palm File Transfer program on your personal computer. To install WISER to the internal drive: 1. Locate the WISER files on your personal computer. If the default installation location was chosen, they will be at: C:\Program Files\WISER\PalmOS\Handheld\WISER.prc C:\Program Files\WISER\PalmOS\Handheld\Data\full\WISERele.pdb C:\Program Files\WISER\PalmOS\Handheld\Data\full\WISERidx.pdb 2. Copy the two .PDB files to "Applications" on the handheld's internal drive. NOTE: do not create a subfolder to put them in. 3. Install WISER.prc in one of two ways a) Use File Transfer and copy the file to "Applications" of the internal drive, like was done with the PDB files, OR b) Use Quick Install to HotSync the WISER.prc to your handheld memory. Most users will find this method more convenient, since WISER will then be accessible from the handheld's application launcher, without having to navigate to the internal drive. INSTALLING TO AN EXPANSION CARD: The File Transfer program can also be used to transfer files to an expansion card. If installation to a card is done in this way, rather than using HotSync, then be aware that the files must be placed in the folder "\PALM\Launcher". Otherwise, WISER will not be able to locate the database. If HotSync is used, files are automatically placed in this location. AUTOMATIC UPDATE CHECKS ----------------------- By default, if an Internet connection is available, a check for a newer version of WISER will automatically occur each time you HotSync with your device. This option is user-configurable, and update checks can always be manually initiated. The first time a HotSync occurs following a WISER installation, a "WISER Update" dialog is displayed on your PC, prompting you to verify that WISER updates should automatically be checked for. If you answer "Yes", the WISER web site is checked for a new version of WISER each time you HotSync. If your installed version is the latest, or if an Internet connection is unavailable, this check will be transparent. If a new version of WISER is available, a "WISER Update" dialog will prompt if you would like to download it. If you do, a browser window will open at the download page of the WISER web site, and you can proceed with downloading and installing the new version. If you choose not to upgrade, then you will continue to be prompted each time you HotSync until an upgrade is performed. The preference for automatic updates can later be changed, and regardless you can always manually initiate an update check. On your PC, go to the Start Menu, find the WISER program group, choose Palm OS, and then select the Check for Updates option. The resulting dialog includes an option for indicating whether this should be done automatically when synchronizing with your device, and its value will reflect your latest decision. USER REGISTRATION ----------------- On the download pages of the WISER web site, and at the end of the WISER setup program, users are encouraged to register if they have not already done so. See above for a discussion on how to handle this issue. WISER OVERVIEW --------------- The Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER) is a system concept for providing First Responders at the scene of hazardous material incidents – chemical, biological, or radioactive – with integrated information, decision support, and communications. The WISER application assists First Responders in rapidly determining the substance involved, including aiding in the identification of unknown substances. Once a substance is identified, WISER quickly and conveniently provides critical information regarding the substance, allowing the necessary immediate actions to be taken to minimize the effects of the HAZMAT incident and thus save lives and protect the environment. Substance information and identification properties come from the Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), developed and maintained by the National Library of Medicine. WISER contains HSDB information and decision support logic for 400+ substances. The substances were chosen based on First Responder inputs, degree of chemical hazard, and historical frequency of incidents. WISER currently exists as a standalone application for - Windows Mobile PDAs (Pocket PC and Smartphone) - Palm OS PDAs - Microsoft Windows PCs (desktop/laptop/tablet PCs/mobile data terminals) - PC and mobile based Internet browsers (WebWISER, http://webwiser.nlm.nih.com) DISCLAIMER ---------- The U.S. Government does not warrant or assume any legal liability or responsibility for the accuracy, completeness, or usefulness of any information, apparatus, product, or process disclosed.
