Mrs. Laura Bush served as the ambassador for The Heart Truth® campaign for 6 years. During this time, as part of her Women's Health and Wellness Initiative, Mrs. Bush led the Federal government's effort to give women a personal and urgent wake-up call about their risk of heart disease. She will continue to support The Heart Truth by serving as its Founding Ambassador.

"With the many risk factors for heart disease, our greatest risk is ignorance. So I encourage every one of you to go home, pull out your favorite red dress, and tell every woman you know that heart disease doesn't care what you wear." —Mrs. Laura Bush

Mrs. Bush noted that "Like many women, I assumed heart disease was a man's disease and cancer was what we would fear the most. Yet heart disease kills more women in our country than all forms of cancer combined. When it comes to heart disease, education, prevention, and even a little red dress can save lives."

A signature element of Mrs. Bush's involvement with The Heart Truth was talking to women across the country at community hospital events featuring the experiences of women living with heart disease. This personal outreach made a difference. Media coverage surrounding Mrs. Bush's visit to a Heart Truth hospital event in Kansas City, MO, was widely credited with saving the life of one woman who was prompted to go to the hospital after experiencing symptoms of a heart attack.

Countless others have learned The Heart Truth through Mrs. Bush's numerous media interviews, including feature stories in Glamour, The New York Times, Parade, People, The Washington Post, Woman's Day, and appearances on all the major network morning shows. She also participated in the unveiling of The Heart Truth's First Ladies Red Dress Collection, which debuted in a special exhibit at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in May 2005.
