SAS Code for Updating Beta ASA24™ Output Files
Two SAS programs are available to allow researchers to update data files from
the Beta version of ASA24.
The ASA24_Beta_Update_Nutrients
program (ZIP) updates nutrient data from version 1.0 of the Food and
Nutrient Database for Dietary Surveys (FNDDS) to version 4.1, which was used by
USDA to process the dietary intake data from the 2007-08 National Health and
Nutrition Examination Survey. The program uses Beta version Individual Foods and
Nutrients (INF) and Daily Total Nutrients (TN) files as input and includes steps
to replace food codes from FNDDS 1.0 with FNDDS 4.1 codes where necessary,
updates data for all nutrients in the Beta files, and adds data for 4 nutrients.
A food description variable is also added. The resulting updated INF and TN
files are consistent with the output files available from ASA24-2011 (formerly referred to as Version 1). The
updated files can be further analyzed by the researcher or merged with data from
ASA24-2011.
Researchers may also wish to update MyPyramid Equivalents Database (MPED)
values in the Individual Foods and MyPyramid Equivalents (INFMYPHEI) and Daily
Total MyPyramid Equivalents (TNMYPHEI) Beta files. The ASA24_Beta_Update_Nutrients_MyP
program (ZIP) applies the nutrient updates noted above and also updates
MyPyramid Equivalents Database (MPED) variables from version 1.0 to an updated
version based on MPED, version 2.0 and the USDA's Center for Nutrition Policy
and Promotion's MPED Addendum; nutritionists on the ASA24 team imputed values
for nine food codes for which MyPyramid Equivalents have not yet been assigned
by USDA.
These programs have been tested using SAS, version 9.2.
