Assessment Process

On-line Assessment

There are two phases to the assessment process. In the first phase, applicants take an on-line un-timed and un-proctored assessment during the application process. Applicants will be informed on whether or not they are selected as Semi-Finalists.

Please note, applicants must follow the system and browser requirements identified. The on-line assessment provides a verification tool to ensure system settings. Other browsers may not be fully compatible and some features (such as the videos) may not function.

Additional information about system and browser requirements can be found in the Assessment Preparation Guide below.

If you have questions about the computer requirements or encounter technical difficulties during the on-line assessment, please select the Help link provided during the application.

In-person Assessment

The second phase is an in-person assessment for those applicants selected as Semi-Finalists. If you meet all eligibility and application requirements, and score sufficiently high on the on-line assessment, you will be invited to schedule your in-person assessment at one of the assessment center locations at your expense. The PMF Program Office does not subsidize travel or offer alternative means for the in-person assessment (e.g., we do not allow substitution via video conferencing). All Semi-Finalists must participate in the in-person assessment for further consideration. Scheduling of the in-person assessment by location will be determined by the number of Semi-Finalists who choose a particular location. For example, the Washington, DC, assessment location is traditionally the highest selected, therefore, that location has the longest schedule.

If you need to reschedule, you will need to send a request via email to pmfapplication@opm.gov, to include your name, current reservation details, justification for the reschedule, and your preferred location (you may need to reschedule to a different location that has availability). Reschedules will only be considered for cases of emergencies. NOTE: Semi-Finalists will be able to reschedule only once or may be placed on a wait list. Please note that any "no shows" will be withdrawn from further consideration.

Each assessment center will have a make-up session built into their schedule, with the Washington, DC, location serving as the nationwide make-up session towards the end of its schedule. Semi-Finalists will receive an email containing a unique link to use when scheduling their in-person assessment; do not share your invitational email with anyone. The link will not work or enable any scheduling if that particular location is full. All Semi-Finalists must follow the instructions provided in their invitational email, including any deadlines identified. If a location is full, the Semi-Finalist may send an email to pmfapplication@opm.gov to request to be placed on a wait list for a single location. If the Semi-Finalist makes such a request and has a confirmed reservation, that reservation will be cancelled and offered to another Semi-Finalist. When a cancellation is known, we will contact those on the wait list on a first come, first serve basis, with as much notice as possible (which could be as early as the night before). The wait lists are not guaranteed. If a Semi-Finalist is confirmed for a wait listed session, he/she will not be able to reschedule.

Information about inclement weather or emergencies impacting an in-person assessment center location will be posted to the PMF website's News section and we will attempt to contact participants directly as soon as possible.

For the 2013 application cycle, the in-person assessments will be conducted in January/February 2013 at the following locations. The entire 2013 in-person assessment process must be completed during January/February 2013, including any make-up sessions or wait list sessions, in order to select Finalists on or around mid-March 2013. Please note, locations and date are subject to change:

Those applicants needing a reasonable accommodation for the on-line assessment will be instructed to NOT proceed with the on-line assessment until contacted by the PMF Program Office. Applicants can proceed with the rest of their application but should NOT submit the application until they have completed the on-line assessment. As a reminder, the on-line assessment is un-timed and un-proctored.
