Childhood obesity rates in America have tripled in the past three decades, and that’s a major public health concern.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

The great increase in childhood obesity means that more of our children are now at risk for developing serious conditions like diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.

To address this epidemic, four leading research funders in the U.S. have formed the National Collaborative on Childhood Obesity Research. The National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture have developed this unique, joint effort to support research that could help reverse childhood obesity.
