Did you ring in the new year with a plate of black eyed peas? If so, you may be off to a healthy start.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
As tradition goes, for some of us, eating black eyed peas can bring good luck in the new year. But there’s more to this dish than meets the eye. Black eyed peas contain no fat, or cholesterol, very little sodium, and are an excellent source of protein and fiber.
So what else should be on your plate in 2012? For good health, follow these tips:
- Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
- Choose at least half of your grains as whole grains.
- Switch to fat-free or low-fat milk.
- Look for foods labeled low sodium, reduced sodium, or no salt added, and skip adding salt when cooking.
