Helping a parent manage diabetes may feel a bit overwhelming at times, but there’s a lot that you can do to improve the situation.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

As a caregiver, you can take steps to make diabetes management easier for yourself, and for an elderly parent. Here are some tips from our listener, Peggy Lewis, who helps her mother control diabetes.

“I think it’s important to go with them to the doctor’s to find out – first of all to find out what’s going on. You have to educate yourself about it so that you can be helpful to them. The other thing is that you have got to make sure you take care of yourself or you aren’t good as a caregiver and you know you’ve got to get rest, you’ve got to get exercise, you’ve got to eat well.”

And, you can help diabetic parents stay healthy by assisting them with efforts to keep their blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol under control.
