How Parents Can Help Youth with Type 2 Diabetes

If your child has type 2 diabetes, they need your help to feel their best and prevent problems.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.
As a parent, you can help your child manage their diabetes. One thing you can do is to encourage healthy food choices. At dinner time, make half their plate fruits and vegetables. Encourage your child to avoid soda and sweetened fruit drinks. Water is a better choice.
Another important way to help your child manage their diabetes is to encourage them to stay physically active. There are many ways you can help your child and your family to stay active and have fun together.
Consider activities that they might enjoy and can stick with, like:
- playing basketball
- dancing to music with friends
- or taking a walk or bike ride
