According to a recent National Institutes of Health study, daily hemodialysis helped some kidney patients feel better and keep their hearts healthier.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Dialysis is a life-saving treatment for patients with end stage kidney disease, and we’re looking for ways to improve it. Usually, dialysis is provided three times per week for about four hours each time. Our study showed that by providing dialysis six times per week, but for a shorter period of time, patients had better overall physical health and quality of life.

Although further study is needed, more frequent treatments can offer a new way to benefit the nearly 400,000 Americans currently on some form of dialysis.
