Did you know that almost 80 percent of kidney failure cases among African Americans are caused by diabetes and high blood pressure?

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments. I’m the director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

Last week, Reverend David Cobb told us how he discovered he had kidney Disease. I asked him if he knew the leading risk factors…

“To be really honest with you, Dr. Rodgers, unfortunately I was not aware that high blood pressure and diabetes were causes of kidney disease until I met my kidney doctor.”

Do you have any of these risk factors for kidney disease?

  • diabetes
  • high blood pressure
  • heart disease
  • or a family history of kidney disease

If you answered yes even once, you should get screened for kidney disease, and share this information with family and friends – so they can get tested if they’re at risk.

For more information on kidney disease, visit our website at NIDDK. This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers. Join me next week for more Healthy Moments.
