Have you considered donating an organ? For retired NBA champion Sean Elliott, a donated kidney changed his life.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Sean was diagnosed with kidney disease and was eligible for a transplant. He was lucky – his brother gave him a kidney. And ten years later, Sean and his brother are in great health.
But Sean is concerned about others, and told us:

“Well, organ donation is so important in the African American community because quite simply there aren’t enough donors, and we have a ton of people that are on the waiting list for organs. We have people that are dying every single day in this country, because we have a shortage of organs.”

“You can have somebody who donates an organ and saves a life, and I don’t know if there’s anything better that you could do for somebody.”
