Can losing anywhere from five to fifteen pounds reduce a person’s chances of developing type 2 diabetes? The answer is – yes!

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

Research supported by our Institute shows that overweight and obese people at high risk for type 2 diabetes can lower their chances of developing the disease by losing a modest amount of weight. My colleague, Dr. David Nathan, put it this way:

“A 5 or 10 or 15 pound weight loss is often sufficient to decrease their chances of getting diabetes. You combine that with moderate activity levels -- take a walk after dinner every night -- whatever it is, but if you increase your activity levels and are able to lose that weight, you can reduce your risks of developing diabetes.”
