How do different types of dietary fat affect your body?

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

To stay heart healthy, the 2010 Dietary Guidelines recommend that you consume less saturated fat and trans fat, because they raise blood cholesterol the most. Saturated fat is found in foods like beef franks and bacon, whole milk, butter, and cheese. Trans fat is found in vegetable shortening, stick margarine, and snack foods.

Canola, corn, and olive oils contain mostly unsaturated fats, which help lower blood cholesterol when used in place of saturated fat.

It’s important to consume fat in reasonable and recommended amounts and to pay attention to what type you’re eating.
