Yellow teeth, smokers cough, major health problems . . . there are a lot of good reasons to quit smoking now. So don’t let the fear of gaining weight keep you from kicking the habit.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do to improve your health. And if you’re worried about gaining weight in the process, there are things you can do to make it less likely.

  • Don’t go too long without eating. Being very hungry can lead to less healthy food choices.
  • Choose healthy snacks, such as fresh fruit, light or single-serving popcorn, or fat-free yogurt.
  • Make moderate-intensity physical activity part of your routine—at least 30 minutes on most days of the week.
