Do you have a family reunion coming up? Last week I suggested using the occasion to hold a group discussion on kidney health. Today, I’ll give you tips for talking one-on-one with a family member at risk for kidney disease.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

A summer reunion can be a good time to talk with relatives one-on-one about the connection between their risk factors and kidney disease. You can start by asking if they know that diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of kidney disease. Follow up by asking if they have been tested for kidney disease.

To get more tips and talking points, download our Family Reunion Health Guide. Visit nkdep.nih.gov and click “get involved.” And you can also follow us on Twitter, @healthymoments. This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers. Join me next week for more Healthy Moments.
