Did you know diabetes affects about 200,000 school-aged children in the US?
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
For students with diabetes, the disease needs to be managed around the clock – even at school. The student, their parent or guardian, and school staff, must work together to put a diabetes care plan in place. The plan should help the student:
- monitor their blood sugar levels
- take their medications as prescribed
- follow their individualized meal plan, and
- be prepared for a medical emergency
To get help with this team approach, order a copy of the National Diabetes Education Program’s updated resource, called “Helping the Student with Diabetes Succeed: A Guide for School Personnel.”
