If you have a child with diabetes, getting ready for a new school year includes a lot more than buying backpacks and notebooks. It also means working with school staff to help keep your child safe.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at NIH.

If you have a child with diabetes, follow these tips as the school year begins:

  • Notify the school right away that your child has diabetes.
  • Meet with the school health team to discuss your child’s diabetes plan.
  • And provide the school with your child’s diabetes supplies and medicines.

For more information, get our free publication called Helping the Student with Diabetes Succeed: A Guide for School Personnel. It can help school staff keep your child safe.

To download the guide, visit yourdiabetesinfo.org. And follow us on Twitter @healthymoments. This is Dr. Griffin Rodgers. Join me next week for more Healthy Moments.
