Back to school means a change in lifestyle for kids. With the right encouragement, your children’s bodies will stay as active as their brains.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you “Healthy Moments” from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Children who are overweight are more likely to become overweight adults, placing them at risk for health problems such as type 2 diabetes and other diseases. Back to school time is a great chance to encourage healthy eating and physical activity.

  • Do you know about the breakfast and lunch programs in your child’s school? If choices are offered, help them make healthy ones.
  • After school, encourage kids to be physically active instead of watching TV or playing video games.
  • And focus on fun—children are more likely to do activities they enjoy such as dancing or playing soccer.
