If you have diabetes, you don’t have to knock yourself out to manage it.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard knows managing diabetes isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it. Here’s what Sugar Ray said about his father’s fight with diabetes:

“Life with diabetes is like life in a boxing ring. Some days you just don’t have your A game and your opponent can get the best of you. Other days you’re managing to fight well and able to out smart and out box your opponent.”

To help manage your diabetes and avoid complications, work with your doctor on a personalized care plan to

  • make healthy food choices;
  • be physically active;
  • take medications if necessary;
  • and check your blood glucose levels regularly.
