How can four questions help you learn to prevent type 2 diabetes?
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Your answers to the following questions could help you lower your risk for developing type 2 diabetes:
- Does anyone in your immediate family have type 2 diabetes?
- Has anyone in your family been told they might get type 2 diabetes?
- Has anyone in your family been told they need to lower their weight or increase their physical activity to prevent type 2 diabetes?
- Did your mother get diabetes, known as gestational diabetes, when she was pregnant?
If your answer to any of these questions is “yes,” you may have a greater chance of developing the disease. Ask your doctor about lifestyle changes you can make to lower your risk.
