For people at risk for type 2 diabetes, small steps can lead to big rewards.
Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Consider Latecia’s story. Her mom has type 2 diabetes. Latecia knows that having a family history of diabetes, and being overweight, increases her chances of getting the disease. So, she decided to get control of her weight.
“In the beginning…it was not easy. I did struggle. My first step was just to get up, get out, and walk.”
Later, she added activities like biking and family football, and changed her eating habits.
Latecia did lose weight and taught her children about diabetes prevention, and shares this advice with others:
“Just get highly educated about diabetes. And if you fall, don’t stay down, get back up again.”
