The New Year is a great time to commit to a healthier lifestyle – for us and for our children. Today, over 16 percent of children are obese, so let’s make 2011 the year they eat better, exercise more and spend less time in front of the computer or TV.

Hi, I’m Dr. Griffin Rodgers, bringing you Healthy Moments from the NIH. I’m the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

To stay healthy, children should eat a variety of nutritious foods, such as fruits, vegetables, reduced fat dairy products, lean meats, and whole grains. Their diet should be low in saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium and added sugars.

Also, children should be physically active most days of the week -- at least 60 minutes per day. They should find fun ways to get moving – like basketball, fast dancing or playing tag.
