Hepatology Fellowship Program

Welcome to the Hepatology Fellowship Program at the National Institutes of Health!

The Liver Diseases Branch at the National Institutes of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases has a long tradition of training fellows for a career in academic Hepatology. This program has made major contributions to both basic and clinical research in the field of liver diseases. Under the leadership of Dr. Jake Liang, Chief of the Liver Diseases Branch, the program has a strong commitment to providing excellent training to its fellows to develop the skills necessary to become independent physician-scientists in the field of Hepatology. Many of its graduates are, or have been, leaders in academic centers and national organizations.

Basic research projects range from molecular pathogenesis of hepatitis B and C, mechanisms of actions of interferons, viral kinetics, antiviral and HCV vaccine development, noncirrhotic portal hypertension, and iron metabolism to immunological responses in viral hepatitis and autoimmune hepatitis. Clinical research protocols are equally diverse and are ever-expanding from studies of the natural history to treatment trials of HCV, HBV, HDV, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, noncirrhotic portal hypertension, primary biliary cirrhosis and autoimmune hepatitis. The program also supports the opportunity for earning a concomitant Masters Degree in Clinical Research. Thus, the Liver Diseases Fellowship.
