Event Details

On February 20, 2012, the Hematology Program of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will host a one-day workshop on Regulatory Determinants of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Self-Renewal, Lineage Commitment and Terminal Differentiation: New Insights. This “state-of-the-science” workshop will take place at The American Institute of Architects building in Washington, DC. The objectives of the workshop are to provide an opportunity for research leaders in the field of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) biology to review and discuss current understanding of how HSC self-renewal, lineage commitment, and terminal differentiation are regulated; to define knowledge gaps and key unanswered questions in these critical aspects of HSC biology; and to define opportunities, directions, and priorities for future research that will address these questions. The program will include presentations by both invited speakers and speakers selected from submitted abstracts, together with poster presentations.

A limited number of travel grants will be made available to registrants whose abstracts are selected for oral presentation at the workshop. Space at the workshop will be limited, so early registration is encouraged. Registrants who submit abstracts for presentation at the workshop will be given preference if the number of registrants exceeds available space. Questions regarding abstract submission and/or registration should be directed to Dr. Wright at daniel.wright@nih.gov.

Workshop Co-organizers and Consultant:
Daniel Tenen (Harvard University); Gerd Blobel (University of Pennsylvania); Tannistha Reya (University of  California, San Diego); Marc Groudine (University of Washington); Daniel Wright (NIDDK, NIH); Terry Bishop (NIDDK, NIH)

Topics:
  • Transcriptional regulation of gene activation and silencing relevant to hematopoietic lineage commitment and differentiation
  • Epigenetic determinants of hematopoietic differentiation and terminal development
  • Determinants of HSC self-renewal versus lineage commitment and differentiation in the hematopoietic niche

Abstracts

Poster

All workshop participants, as well as all invited speakers, who wish to bring a poster presentation to the Regulatory Determinants of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Self-Renewal, Lineage
Commitment and Terminal Differentiation:  New Insights should submit a concise one-page abstract summarizing their presentation no later than Wednesday, February 8, 2012.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS will be displayed on 4-foot-high by 6-foot-wide poster boards. Pushpins and Velcro will be provided onsite. Please follow the instructions below to submit a poster abstract for consideration.

  • The abstract must not exceed 1 page of text using 11-point type, single-spaced. The abstract text is limited to 500 words.
  • The poster abstract should include a title, all authors (presenting author should be clearly underlined), department affiliation, university, city, state/province, country, and email address. Please acknowledge appropriate funding sources for your research.
  • Submit your abstract in electronic format, preferably MS Word.
  • Email the poster abstract no later than Wednesday, February 8, 2012, to Ms. Angela Meadows at ameadows@scgcorp.com.

Travel Awards and Selected Talks From Abstract Submissions

Students and postdoctoral researchers/fellows are encouraged to attend this workshop. A limited number of travel awards are available to workshop participants who submit abstracts selected for presentation as concise talks in the body of the workshop program. Presenters for short talks and travel award recipients will be chosen from among those who have submitted abstracts on the basis of special relevance of the abstract to the underlying themes of the Workshop. If you wish to be considered for a travel award and concise talk, please include a short cover letter containing a brief biographical sketch, along with your abstract. The poster abstract submission deadline is Wednesday, February 8, 2012.

Please send all abstract submissions to:  ameadows@scgcorp.com

PowerPoint Presentations

All speakers should plan to send their PowerPoint presentations by email to ameadows@scgcorp.com no later than Monday, February 13, 2012. All presentations will be loaded onto the workshop laptop. If you plan to use a MAC computer for your presentation, please note that information on your registration or send an email to Ms. Meadows. Both Mac and PC laptops will be available at the workshop.
