New PI's Workshop

December 2–4, 2012 - New PI's Workshop

Event Details

The purpose of this meeting is to provide our first-time R01 investigators the information they will need to be successful in securing continued support for their research programs at a very critical juncture in their career. It also provides a networking forum for the new investigators to interact with NIDDK program and review staff and with each other.

Participation in this meeting is by invitation only to those investigators in a position to renew their R01s within the next year or two. As we hold this workshop on a regular basis, those who do not receive an invitation to the 2012 meeting will be included in future meeting invitations. Because space at the workshop is limited, "New PIs" invited to attend this workshop are encouraged to register as soon as possible if they wish to participate. Once you have registered for the meeting, please contact your R01 program officer for additional information.

Abstracts

The Abstract Deadline Date is extended to November 9, 2012

Each participant is expected to prepare a poster for display on Monday evening. The format of the poster session will be different from the usual format. All participants will be assigned to a small group based loosely on the scientific content of their abstract. Within the groups, each author will be asked to present his/her poster to the entire group, focusing on the following key questions:

  1. What is the overall goal of your research project?
  2. What are the major techniques I used?
  3. What are the most significant findings?
  4. What are your future directions?
These will be very brief (2-3 minutes, maximum) oral presentations to the whole group—very much like “speed dating” for science. The group will have a brief time for questions and then move on to the next poster and presentation. The idea is to provide a format that fosters maximum networking and allows new investigators to identify future collaborations. At the conclusion of the small group sessions, all are free to visit other rooms to view posters outside their group.

Please follow the instructions below to submit an abstract for a poster presentation:
  • All abstracts must be submitted electronically by 5:00 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time), Monday, November 9, 2012, via email to Michelle Watson at mwatson@scgcorp.com. Please include “Poster Abstract for NIDDK New PIs Workshop” in the subject line.
  • Please attach your abstract as a MS Word document to the email along with any comments.
  • The abstract should be no more than one, single-sided page (see below for format).
  • The abstract should be single-spaced with sections on Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions.
  • Please type the title of your abstract in Arial, 12 pt. bold font using Title Case Letters.
  • List the names, degree(s), and institutional affiliation(s) of all authors in order of their contribution to the research.
  • Underline the name of the person presenting the abstract.
Poster Format

Posters will be displayed on 4-foot-high by 6-foot-wide poster boards. Pushpins and Velcro will be provided onsite. All presenters must register for the conference. Feel free to “recycle” a recent, previously presented poster! Or, if you are preparing a new one, keep it short and sweet!
