Windows Hosting Services

Windows Hosting Services provide dedicated, shared, and virtual Windows servers that are centrally supported in a fully managed, 24x7 hosted environment. Services include managed storage and backup, SSL certificates, network security architectures, application firewalls, shared and dedicated load balancers, central web and database services including shared and dedicated configurations, file and print services, and disaster recovery offerings.

Windows hosting services are available both in the NIH Data Center on the NIH Campus and at our contracted off-campus commercial site in northern Virginia.

We support the major components of the Windows Server Suite:

  • IIS (virtualized, shared, and dedicated)
  • SQL Server 2005/2008 (shared, and dedicated)
  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Services 2010 (shared and dedicated services)

Customer Benefits

Windows Hosting provides a secure, SSAE 16 (formerly SAS 70)-audited environment with high availability configurations that includes patching, monitoring, and dedicated customer coordinators. The Windows servers provide a computing environment suitable for critical enterprise-wide applications.

As a lower-cost solution over standard dedicated physical servers, CIT offers a Virtual Server service in the Windows environment. Server virtualization creates operational benefits, such as increased capacity, by allowing multiple operating system instances to pull resources from a pool of physical servers.

Customer Market

This service is available to all NIH customers and to customers of other Government Agencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can CIT provide website hosting on the Windows hosting platform?
A: CIT provides Windows-based web hosting services to all organizations at the National Institutes of Health. The servers used by CIT are highly fault tolerant and scaled to the needs of the client. The hardware configuration is better than the best hosting websites in the marketplace. Your organization can have its own domain name within the NIH (
www.yourdomain.nih.gov).

Q: Can my application be hosted away from the NIH campus?
A:  Windows Hosting services are available both in the highly secure NIH Data Center (on campus) and at a contracted off-site facility in Northern Virginia (Sterling).  CIT’s off-campus site (30 miles away and on a different power grid from NIH) is a secure commercial location run under the auspices of CIT. The off-campus location is connected to NIH by an extremely high-bandwidth network and features 24 x 7 monitoring as well as full technical support.

Q: Where can I find the rates for Windows Hosting Services?
A: The rates can be found at
http://cit.nih.gov/ServiceCatalog/DataCenterRates.htm under “Microsoft Windows Services.”
