Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP)
Brief Program Description: The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) sponsors the Biomedical Engineering Summer Internship Program (BESIP). The internship allows rising senior biomedical engineering students to participate in cutting-edge biomedical research projects under the mentorship of world-class scientists in NIH laboratories in Bethesda, Maryland. Please note: the BESIP is a separate program from the NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) in Biomedical Research.
Program Start & End Dates: the program runs for 10 weeks from June 2 through August 10, 2013.
Who is eligible: Undergraduate biomedical engineering students who have completed their junior year of college.

Introduction to Cancer Research Careers - ICRC
Brief Program Description: Eighteen prospective interns will visit NCI where they will learn about training opportunities and have a chance to interview for summer or post-baccalaureate internships. Participants must have previous research experience. They will be selected by a committee of NCI scientists The visit will take place February 6-7.

Werner H. Kirsten Student Intern Program
Brief Program Description: The Werner H. Kirsten Student Intern Program (WHK SIP) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at Frederick is designed to expose high school seniors to research and administrative management in a health care environment. The scientific interns experience the basic methods of biomedical research through "hands-on" laboratory training. The students in the Internships in Support of Science/Research are assigned projects in budget, personnel, information technology, graphics and media.
Program Start & End Dates: June to May (year long: paid 8 weeks in summer, volunteer during school year)
Who is eligible: Students who at the time of application are juniors in high school and enrolled in school at the one of the following places: Frederick, Carroll or Washington County Public School Systems; Saint John's Catholic Prep (Frederick, MD); Frederick Christian Academy (Frederick, MD); Poolesville High School (Montgomery County, MD); Fairfield High School (Fairfield, PA) or Jefferson County Public School System (West Virginia). Students home schooled in the schools or counties participating in the WHK SIP are eligible.

Cancer Research Interns (CRI) Summer Internship Program
Brief Program Description: The Cancer Research Interns (CRI) Summer Internship Program is a strategic effort by the CCR to increase diversity by recruiting and training students from groups under-represented in biomedical science or disadvantaged backgrounds who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and cancer-related interests. The premise of the Program was to provide an initial training opportunity however, over the past several years we have expanded selections to include students (from under-represented groups) who are pursuing advanced degrees.
The Program networks with colleges, universities, and minority-targeted programs across the United States. We have created a pipeline of future cancer researchers from diverse backgrounds who are preparing themselves for leadership roles. More than one-third of our CRI fellows have begun or have completed graduate degrees in science. Prospective CRI Fellows will be interviewed by the selection panel and notified of their acceptance by March 2013.
Program Start & End Dates: end of May until August 31st, with flexibility based on student's academic schedule
Who is eligible: students from groups under-represented in biomedical science and/or finacially disadvantaged backgrounds who have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and cancer-related research interests. Students must be 18 years of age or older.

Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research for Veterinary Medical Students
Brief Program Description: The NIH is interested in providing veterinary medical students with the opportunity to participate in the NIH Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research. This unique opportunity, made available through the National Cancer Institute (NCI), provides veterinary medical students with research experiences at the Federal government's key institution combining both clinical and basic research.
The program also affords the opportunity to explore the roles of veterinarians at the NIH and surrounding institutions through special tours and interviews.
Program Start & End Dates: Internships generally begin in late May and end in August/September.
Who is eligible: Veterinary students participating in the program must be in good academic standing in an accredited veterinary medical college professional doctoral degree program.

Diversity In Vision Research & Ophthalmology (DIVRO)
Brief Program Description: Summer internship program designed to promote career development opportunities for science students interested in pursuing a career in research or medicine.
Program Start & End Dates: Mid-May until August
Who is eligible: Underrepresented minority students age sixteen and over who are enrolled at least half-time in high school or in an accredited U.S. college or university and have completed course work relevant to biomedical, behavioral, or statistical research. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and should have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) or science course GPA of 3.2 or better.

NIDDK/Office of Minority Health Research Coordination (OMHRC) Summer Internship Program
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) through the Office of Minority Health Research Coordination invites students to submit their application for the Summer Research Training Program. This program is specific to undergraduate students underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research, including African American, Hispanic American, Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders. Successful applicants will join one of NIDDK's research laboratories in Bethesda, Maryland or Phoenix, Arizona for ten weeks beginning in June through August. At the end of the summer, students participate in the NIH Summer Research Program Poster Day. This provides an opportunity for students to present their work before the NIH scientific community. Students are also expected to participate in meetings and seminars in their individual laboratories.

NIDCR Summer Dental Student Award
Brief Program Description: To expose future dentists to careers in research, the NIDCR offers an outstanding summer research training opportunity for dental students. The NIDCR Summer Dental Student Award is designed to give talented dental students hands-on research experience and exposure to the latest advances in oral health research. Selected candidates are assigned to mentors who conduct research in the students' areas of interest. Participation in the program may result in presentation of research findings at a scientific meeting or co-authorship of scientific publications.
Program Start & End Dates: Applicants can start between May 1 and the first week of July. Accepted applicants must work for a minimum of 8 consecutive weeks.
Who is eligible:
- Applicants must be enrolled in accredited U.S. dental schools.
- U.S. citizenship or permanent residence is required.
- The nominating dental school must provide support for round trip transportation for the student.(This must be stated in the dean's nomination letter).
- Applicant must work for a minimum of 8 consecutive weeks.

Brief Program Description: Opportunity for students to work in the Office of Research Facilities for the summer. The program focuses on students in trades, engineering, architecture, and physical sciences programs, but will consider others as well. Students are expected to work in an area associated with their field of study.

Who is eligible: Any student who is eligible for the STEP program, especially those in the trades, engineering, architecture, and physical sciences.
Recruitment and Training for Under-Represented Populations (RTURP) Program
Brief Program Description: The Recruitment and Training Program (RTURP) for Under-Represented Populations supports a series of special initiatives designed to have a broad but integrated influence on reducing the burden of drug abuse among minorities and other traditionally under-represented populations. Goals and objectives are consistent with NIDA efforts designed to respond to the special needs of ethnic and other under-served segments of the population, and align with NIH's strategic plan of improved diversity and its Office of Research on Minority Health's (ORMH) mission of increasing the number of minorities who conduct research. The central theme has been the changing face of science. Its paramount objective is to increase the participation of under-represented groups in the forefront and in the broad spectrum of biomedical and behavioral research and training activities performed at the Intramural Research Program of NIDA, NIH.

- 1. Students must be at least 16 years old.
- 2. Students must be a U.S. citizen or permanent.
- 3. Students must be from an under-represented group; must be currently enrolled or have been accepted, into an accredited high school, college, graduate or medical school, in good academic standing and seeking a degree or diploma.
