Director, Office of Strategic Coordination
The Office of Strategic Coordination is excited to share what’s on the horizon in 2013! The most exciting thing about the Common Fund is that the programs it supports are high priorities for the NIH as a whole. The programs that will be launched in 2013 seem especially momentous, since they all target the next generation of scientists in some way. Just as molecular biology was recognized as a core competency in graduate training a generation ago, quantitative training to use large data sets will now be integrated into NIH-supported training programs. This will be one component of the new Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) initiative. Recognizing that a career in the lab is not the only career essential for the research enterprise, the Common Fund will support the development of novel approaches to prepare trainees for careers in industry, government, entrepreneurship, and other pursuits that support research (Read the Notice about upcoming funding here). And in recognition that recruitment and retention of the best and brightest investigators is imperative, the Common Fund will support a major new program to draw students from all population segments into research (Learn more here). Collectively, these programs are poised to shift the research culture and to transform the research enterprise.
