Program Snapshot

The Common Fund’s Health Economics Program aims to support research on how specific features of the structure or organization of health care delivery organizations and reimbursement systems influence how health care technologies are adopted and combined by health care providers, how they are applied or used for specific patients, and how those features could be modified to enhance effectiveness. The overall goal is to identify and evaluate strategies to improve efficiency in the production of health and the delivery of health care services.

The Program currently has four major initiatives:

Changing Incentives for Consumers, Insurers, and Providers -- This initiative will encourage research addressing behavioral responses to incentives facing consumers, providers, and insurers.
Science of Structure, Organization, and Practice Design in the Efficient Delivery of Healthcare -- The goal of this initiative is to foster research on scientific questions about the effects on costs and outcomes of changes in the way health care is organized and delivered.
Economics of Prevention -- This initiative will support development and application of economic tools and systems modeling to identify and evaluate preventive interventions, assessing short- and long-term outcomes, benefits, and costs.
Data Infrastructure to Enable Research on Health Reform -- This initiative will provide targeted resources to improve the value of existing data resources, promote needed linkages, guide the development of future activities in DHHS, and meet high-priority needs, taking advantage of economies of scale.

Program Highlights

In 2012 the Health Economics Working Group held teleconferences with invited experts to discuss the state of the science concerning the determinants and consequences of personalized health care and to discuss medical technologies.
