NIMHD announces a new initiative focused on promoting science education and increasing the pool of individuals from health disparity populations in the science field. Through four specific components, the Science Education Initiative supports individuals at several levels of the science career spectrum from kindergarten through the post-doctoral level. It also includes a community outreach component to enhance the exchange and dissemination of health and science-related information to diverse communities.
Purpose: to support educational, mentoring and career development programs for individuals from health disparity populations that are underrepresented in the research sciences
Goal: to develop a diverse cohort of health disparities researchers that draws upon the talent and potential of all of America's diverse populations, thus improving the nation's ability to address health disparities
Eligibility: A variety of institutions are eligible to apply under this Funding Opportunity Announcement. They include: public and private Institutions of higher education, with institutions that have historically served minority populations being encouraged to apply; nonprofit organizations; small businesses; governmental entities; school districts; and faith-based or community organizations.
Components of the NIMHD Science Education Initiative
i) K-12 Science Education Initiative --seeks to bolster science instruction in grades K through 12. It supports:
- Curriculum development
- Career development and internship opportunities for K-12 science teachers
- Public outreach activities that educate teachers, students, and the community on health-related research topics
- The development of resources and teaching tools that will aid science teachers
ii) National High School Youth Summer Initiative --is focused on acquainting students from underrepresented populations with the possibilities and realities of a career in scientific research. Supported activities:
- Increasing the awareness and readiness of high school students from health disparity populations for careers in scientific research
- Increasing the awareness of these students of the personal and academic skills required for admission to colleges, universities, and health profession schools
- Fostering leadership and strengthening of academic skills in science, technology, engineering, and math among these students
- Introducing high school students to the national health and scientific professional organizations and to the role of these organizations play in promoting health career role-modeling
- Establishing student access to role models and mentors in science and health careers fields
iii) Mentoring and Career Development Initiative -- is focused on undergraduate students interested in pursuing advanced degrees in biomedical, behavioral, and clinical sciences. It provides:
- Educational and career enhancement opportunities
- Faculty mentors for these students
- Opportunities for research internships
- Academic enrichment programs for these students including seminar series and other academic enrichment programs
iv) Health Professions Research Capacity-building Initiative - supports postdoctoral professionals and early stage investigators in clinical and health disparity research areas. This component is based on faculty mentoring, i.e., pairing young investigators with seasoned faculty. It is meant to provide or enhance: Academic enrichment programs Mentoring Activities that enhance faculty research Networking by these individuals Distance learning activities
v) Outreach and dissemination Initiative -- supports the communication of health and health research information to health disparity communities.
