Cutting-edge environmental health research depends on scientific collaboration. To identify toxicants in the environment, learn how they affect people’s health, and develop ways to prevent or treat environmentally-induced diseases, researchers from complementary disciplines must approach the central problems from a variety of angles.
NIEHS facilitates these vital scientific collaborations through its Environmental Health Sciences Core Centers. With 20 centers across the country, NIEHS provides funding for scientific equipment, facilities, and other resources that are shared among researchers tackling related environmental health questions. The centers foster interactions among researchers to allow them to take advantage of innovations and approaches beyond what individual scientists would be likely to attain by working independently.
Through these centers, NIEHS aims to stimulate new discoveries and efficiently address environmental health problems. Rather than funding individual research projects, the Environmental Health Core Centers support the administrative and physical framework needed to bring together scientists from multiple disciplines to pursue promising research opportunities. The centers also cultivate the next generation of environmental health scientists by providing career development for future research leaders.
A hallmark of the centers is their community engagement activities, which ensure that research findings can be translated into practical tools and resources for community residents, health care providers, public health practitioners, and policy makers. As part of their community engagement efforts, Centers collaborate with community partners to identify and address community concerns, increase public awareness of the potential health risks of exposures, and inform decision making to reduce environment–related disease.
