Data Query System: Features

The NIDCR/CDC Data Query System (DQS) provides a simple-to-use interface that allows a user to structure customized interactive queries for the following oral health indicators:

Exam Indicators

Self-Reported Indicators

Dental Caries    Dental Visits
Periodontal Assessment/Disease    Self-Assessed Oral Health Status
Sealants    Self-Perceived Dental Needs
Tooth Loss    Dental Services
Trauma    Dental Expense and Payment Source
Dentures    Provider Type
     Edentulism
     Affordability of Dental Care
     Tooth Loss Due to Disease
     Preventive Care

The DQS supports queries of several survey databases reporting national data on oral health. Not all indicators are available from all surveys. The surveys supported in the DQS include the following:

  • National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 198894 (NHANES III) and NHANES 199902;
  • Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS), 199607;
  • National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), 199708; and
  • Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), 2002.

The DQS provides a step-by-step design that helps the user structure a data query.

STEP 1: Select the oral health indicator
STEP 2: Select the survey data source
STEP 3: Select criteria for the indicator
STEP 4: Specify the independent variable(s)
STEP 5: Further stratify the data (optional)

Once the initial query is submitted, the DQS displays the parameters of the query structure to allow the user to make any adjustments if necessary. Once the user confirms the selections and submits the query, the DQS displays the results.

Data tables present the sample size, weighted population estimates, results in percentages or means (depending on the data being queried), and the 95% confidence intervals. To insure statistical confidence and protect confidentiality, data in table cells that are too small to produce reliable population estimates are provided, but tagged with an asterisk (*). Users are advised to use caution with these data.

Results can be displayed as graphics or downloaded to Microsoft Excel. Query results and graphics can be printed to the user抯 printer.

After seeing the initial results, the user can further stratify an independent variable in the initial query to produce two-way or three-way tables.

The upper and lower confidence limits are provided to the user to define the statistical confidence range for each percentage or mean at the 95% confidence level.The user is cautioned about comparing percentages or means and concluding that differences exist without considering the confidence interval. For example, although two percentages may appear to be different, such as 43.6% and 47.2%, if their confidence intervals overlap the difference between the two percentages are not actually statistically different. In this case, no statement can be made suggesting that one percentage is significantly different from the other.
