Figure 5.1 is a line graph showing the trends in lifetime marijuana use among youths aged 12 to 17 and young adults aged 18 to 25 from the years 1965 to 2002. Among youths, beginning in 1967, use generally increased until it reached a peak at 19.6 percent in 1979. It generally declined until 1991, when the rate was 11.5 percent; after 1991 the trend reversed, reaching a peak at 21.9 percent in 2001. The percentage of young adults aged 18 to 25 who had ever used marijuana was 5.1 percent in 1965 and increased steadily to 54.4 percent in 1982. The rate for young adults declined somewhat from 1982 to 1993 and increased to 53.8 percent by 2002.
