Figure 6.3 is a line graph that shows the number of new nonmedical users of psychotherapeutics aged 12 or older from 1965 to 2001 by type of psychotherapeutic. The number of new users of sedatives generally increased from 1965 to 1977 and has since declined and remained less than 300,000 since 1981. The number of new users of tranquilizers and stimulants generally increased from 1965 to 1977 and remained steady until the 1990s when the number of new users started to increase, with the number of new users of tranquilizers in 2001 being 1.1 million and the number of new users of stimulants being 808,000 in 2001. The number of new users of pain relievers has always been slightly higher than the number of new users of other psychotherapeutic drugs, but in the 1990s the number of new users dramatically increased and in 2001 the number of new users of pain relievers was 2.7 million.
