Figure 8.2 is a bar graph showing past year dependence or abuse of specific substances among past year users of the substances aged 12 or older in 2002. Among past year users of heroin, 53.0 percent were dependent or had abused heroin. Among past year users of cocaine, 25.2 percent were dependent or had abused cocaine. Among past year users of marijuana, 16.7 percent were dependent or had abused marijuana. Almost 16 percent of past year sedative users were dependent on or had abused sedatives. Substance dependence or abuse on pain relievers or stimulants was 13.7 percent among past year users of these substances. Among past year users of alcohol, 11.6 percent were dependent on or abused alcohol. Among past year users of tranquilizers, 10.5 percent were dependent on or abused tranquilizers. Among past year users of hallucinogens, 9.0 percent were dependent on or abused hallucinogens. And among past year users of inhalants, 8.6 percent were dependent on or abused inhalants.
