Figure 6.4 is a line graph showing the annual numbers of new tobacco users aged 12 or older from 1965 to 2001 by tobacco type. The number of new users of cigars has been higher in general than the number of new users of smokeless tobacco since 1965 and has generally increased from 1990 to 2001. The number of new cigarette users was relatively steady from 1965 to 1990, but increased from 2.6 million in 1990 to a high of 3.6 million in 1996 and has since decreased to 3.0 million in 2000. The number of new daily cigarette smokers has not had a definite trend since 1965. The number of new users of smokeless tobacco generally increased from 1965 to a high of around 1.5 million in the early 1980s and has since declined gradually to about 1 million new users in 2001.
