Figure 8.6 is a bar graph that shows percentages of past year illicit drug or alcohol dependence or abuse among youths aged 12 to 17 by county type in 2002. Among youths aged 12 to 17, rates of illicit drug or alcohol dependence or abuse were as follows: 10.8 percent for youths in nonmetropolitan rural counties, 9.3 percent for youths in nonmetropolitan urbanized counties, 9.0 percent for youths in nonmetropolitan less urbanized counties, and 8.8 percent for youths in both large metropolitan and small metropolitan counties.
