Figure 9.3 is a bar chart showing percentages of substance use among adults aged 18 or older, by serious mental illness in 2002. Among adults with SMI, 28.9 percent used an illicit drug in the past year, while the rate was 12.7 percent among those without SMI. Among adults with SMI, the rate of past year cigarette use was 49.3 percent, while the rate was 29.9 percent among adults without SMI. Among adults with SMI, 28.8 percent reported past month binge alcohol use, whereas among adults without SMI, 23.9 percent reported past month binge alcohol use.
