County Typology Codes

Classifies U.S. counties by an exclusive economic type (farming, mining, manufacturing, services, government, unspecialized) and nonexclusive policy type (housing stress, low education, low employment, persistent poverty/child poverty, population loss, nonmetro recreation, retirement destination).

Creative Class County Codes

Dairy Data

These data are from several USDA agencies (see scope in Documentation). They were previously were included in the Meat Statistics page in the Livestock, Dairy, and Poultry (LDP) Outlook tables and may contain revisions not included in previous releases of the LDP tables.

Eating and Health Module (ATUS)

The Eating & Health (EH) Module of the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) collects data to analyze relationships among time use patterns and eating patterns, nutrition, and obesity; food and nutrition assistance programs; and grocery shopping and meal preparation.

Feed Grains Database

The Feed Grains Database contains statistics on four feed grains (corn, grain sorghum, barley, and oats), foreign coarse grains (feed grains plus rye, millet, and mixed grains), hay, and related items.

Fertilizer Imports/Exports

This product provides U.S. annual data on imports and exports of selected fertilizer types. The data cover imports from 1995 to 2011 and exports from 1990 to 2011 for 26 major fertilizer products and materials, and for 82 major trading countries.

Fertilizer Use and Price

This product brings together 1960-2012 data on fertilizer consumption in the United States by plant nutrient and major selected product, as well as consumption of mixed fertilizers, secondary nutrients, and micronutrients.

Food and Nutrition Assistance Research Database

ERS supports a broad spectrum of food and nutrition assistance research and has compiled an electronic database of over 800 peer-reviewed reports and articles based on ERS-supported research. The database is searchable by title, lead author, topic, year of publication, and data set analyzed.

Food Availability (Per Capita) Data System

The ERS Food Availability (per capita) Data System includes three distinct but related data series on food and nutrient availability for consumption. The data serve as popular proxies for actual consumption. Data are now provided through 2008 at the national level.

Food Consumption and Nutrient Intakes

Food consumption in terms of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans’ food groups is reported for all sources and the total U.S. population, as well as by food source, children age 2-19, and adults age 20 and older.

Food Desert Locator

The Food Desert Locator provides a spatial overview of low-income neighborhoods with high concentrations of people who are far from a supermarket or large grocery store. This mapping tool will allow users to map food deserts—areas with limited access to affordable and nutritious foods.

Food Dollar Series

The food dollar series measures annual expenditures by U.S. consumers on domestically produced food. The series is composed of three primary series: the marketing bill series, the industry group series, and the primary group series, showing three different ways to split up the same food dollar.

Food Environment Atlas

The Food Environment Atlas is a web-based mapping tool developed by ERS that allows users to compare U.S. counties in terms of their “food environment”--indicators (most at the county level) that help determine and reflect a community’s access to affordable, healthy food.

Food Expenditures

The ERS Food Expenditure Series annually measures total U.S. food expenditures, including purchases by consumers, governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations.

Food Price Outlook

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for food is probably the most widely used indicator of changes in retail food prices. ERS regularly updates food price forecasts for the short-term period.

Food Security in the United States

This product provides information about publicly available data from national surveys that include the U.S. Food Security Survey Module. Technical information is provided to facilitate appropriate use of the data, and links are provided to access data on line or to order the data files on CD-ROM.

Fruit and Vegetable Prices

How much do fruits and vegetables cost? ERS estimated average prices for 153 commonly consumed fresh and processed fruits and vegetables.

International Baseline Data

International baseline projections indicate supply, demand, and trade for major agricultural commodities for selected countries. These projections provide foreign country detail supporting the annual USDA agricultural baseline, which are longrun, 10-year projections.

International Food Consumption Patterns

Total and marginal budget shares and income and price elasticities are estimated, using 2005 ICP data, for nine broad consumption groups and eight food subgroups across 144 countries.

International Macroeconomic Data Set

The International Macroeconomic Data Set provides data from 1969 through 2020 for real (adjusted for inflation) gross domestic product (GDP), population, real exchange rates, and other variables for the 190 countries and 34 regions that are most important for U.S. agricultural trade.

Livestock & Meat International Trade Data

The Livestock and Meat Trade Data Set contains monthly and annual data for imports and exports of live cattle, hogs, sheep, and goats, as well as beef and veal, pork, lamb and mutton, chicken meat, turkey meat, and eggs.

Major Land Uses

The Major Land Uses (MLU) series is the longest running, most comprehensive accounting of all major uses of public and private land in the United States. The MLU series contains acreage estimates of major uses by region and States, beginning in 1945 and published about every 5 years since.

Meat Price Spreads

This data set provides monthly average price values, and the differences among those values, at the farm, wholesale, and retail stages of the production and marketing chain for selected cuts of beef, pork, and broilers.

Milk Cost of Production Estimates

Annual milk cost of production estimates are available by State and by size of operation from 2005 through 2011.

Natural Amenities Scale

The natural amenities scale county-based measure of the physical characteristics of an area that enhance the location as a place to live. The scale was constructed by combining six measures of climate, topography, and water area that reflect environmental qualities most people prefer.

Normalized Prices

ERS annually calculates "normalized prices," which smooth out the effects of shortrun seasonal or cyclical variation, for key agricultural inputs and outputs. They are used to evaluate the benefits of projects affecting agriculture.

Oilseed, oilmeal, and fats and oils supply and use statistics. Includes oilseed acreage, yield, and production estimates and farm and wholesale price series.

Organic Handlers: Procurement and Contracting

Get select results from the 2004 and 2007 Nationwide Surveys of Organic Manufacturers, Processors, and Distributors. Data are available on 9 commodity groups, such as fruit and nuts, and 45 commodities, such as berries and citrus.

Organic Prices

Farmgate and wholesale prices for select organic and conventional fruits and vegetables, wholesale prices for organic and conventional poultry (broilers) and eggs, as well as f.o.b. and spot prices for organic grain and feedstuffs.

Organic Production

ERS collects data from USDA-accredited State and private certification groups to calculate the extent of certified organic farmland acreage and livestock in the United States.

Phytosanitary Regulation

This data product identifies which countries, under APHIS phytosanitary rules, are eligible to export to the United States the fresh fruits and vegetables that are most important in the American diet.

Population-Interaction Zones for Agriculture (PIZA)

The PIZA codes index small geographic areas (the contiguous 48 States divided up into five-kilometer grid cells) according to the size and proximity of population concentrations.

Price Spreads from Farm to Consumer

ERS compares the prices paid by consumers for food with the prices received by farmers for their corresponding commodities. This product provides data for at-home foods by commodity group.

Quarterly Food-at-Home Price Database

The Quarterly Food-at-Home Price Database (QFAHPD) provides food price data to support research on the economic determinants of food consumption, diet quality, and health outcomes. The QFAHPD database was constructed from household food-at-home purchases reported in the Nielsen Homescan panel data.

Rural Definitions

Dozens of definitions are currently used by Federal and State agencies, researchers, and policymakers. The ERS Rural Definitions data product allows users to make comparisons among nine representative rural definitions.

Rural-Urban Commuting Area Codes

The rural-urban commuting area codes (RUCA) classify U.S. census tracts using measures of urbanization, population density, and daily commuting from the decennial census.

Rural-Urban Continuum Codes

The Rural-Urban Continuum Codes distinguishes metropolitan (metro) counties by the population size of their metro area, and nonmetropolitan (nonmetro) counties by degree of urbanization and adjacency to a metro area or areas. There are three metro and six nonmetro groupings.

Season-Average Price Forecasts

This data product provides three Excel file spreadsheet models that use futures prices to forecast the U.S. season-average price received and the implied CCP for three major field crops (corn, soybeans, and wheat).
