The National Map Viewer and Download Platform

Use The National Map Viewer and Download Platform to visualize, inspect, and download our most current topographic base map data and products for free. Managed by the USGS National Geospatial Program (NGP), The National Map Viewer provides access to all eight primary data themes of The National Map to include US Topo and historical topographic map products. The viewer platform is extended upon the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency's (NGA) Palanterra x3 Viewer.

Data include: Elevation, Orthoimagery, Hydrography, Geographic Names, Boundaries, Transportation, Structures, and Land Cover, while products include: US Topo and Historical Topo Maps. The National Map Viewer also allows visualization and identification queries (but not downloads) of Other Featured Data, to include Ecosystems, Protected Areas, Gap Analysis Program Land Cover, Hazards, Weather, Wetlands, Public Land Survey System, and National Park Service Boundaries.

To research and download historical USGS data, such as Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles and Digital Line Graphs, or to access lidar point cloud data, go to Earth Explorer.

The Seamless Server Viewer was retired on July 31, 2012

Retirement of the Seamless Server Viewer culminated efforts by NGP to transition multiple viewers into just one viewer to create a one-stop location for visualization and delivery of its public domain vector and raster data. The National Map Viewer offers similar capabilities for service access and data download previously available through the Seamless Server Viewer.

How to locate and download National Elevation Dataset (NED) data using The National Map Viewer

Bare earth digital elevation model (DEM) data from the NED, previously available through the Seamless Server Viewer, is accessed in The National Map Viewer with the 'Download Data' tool. Use the following procedures to download DEM data:

  1. Zoom to your area of interest.
  2. Click the Download Data tool near the top right corner of the viewer banner.
  3. Use the current map extent, choose a reference area polygon from the Download options dropdown menu, or create your own custom polygon.
  4. Select the data theme of Elevation and product format.
  5. Select available NED products, such as 2 arc-second (Alaska only), 1 arc-second (conterminous U.S., Hawaii, Puerto Rico, portions of Alaska, western & southern Canada along U.S. border, and all of Mexico), 1/3 arc-second (conterminous U.S., Hawaii, and portions of Alaska), or 1/9 arc-second (in limited areas of U.S. only).
  6. Add selected products to the Cart.
  7. Checkout and enter your e-mail address twice to place your order.

Note that you will not initially see the Elevation theme in The National Map Viewer's Overlays table of contents, although we are working on offering more visualization options in the near future. Also, be aware that NED 1- and 1/3-arc-second elevation products are available only as 'staged' data in pre-packaged 1x1 degree cell extents in either ArcGrid or GridFloat formats, while NED 1/9-arc-second elevation products are currently available through 'dynamic' extracts in user defined reference area polygons with additional formats of GeoTIFF or BIL_16INT (besides ArcGrid or GridFloat).

Please review our FAQ Help page at http://viewer.nationalmap.gov/help for assistance with downloading data through The National Map Viewer. FAQ content includes a Download User Guide and Procedures for creating a custom reference area polygon for downloading data.
