As long as there has been a First Family, there have been First Pets. Birds and cats have been popular choices, as well as horses, but there also have been some unusual creatures, including Thomas Jefferson’s bear cubs, John Quincy Adams’ alligator, Benjamin Harrison’s goat and Harry Truman’s squirrel “Pete.” By far, the most popular “companions-in-chief” have been dogs, from George Washington’s hounds at Mount Vernon to Barack Obama’s new puppy, “Bo.”
